For the first time, it is possible to administrate a cytostatic containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient paclitaxel to dogs without serious adverse effects.
Paclitaxel has been one of the most effective and widely used cytostatics for the last 15 years but has not been used previously in veterinary medicine. For existing treatment options with taxanes hypersensitivity reactions has been a serious limiting factor for the use in companion animals. This is mainly due to the Cremophor used as an excipient in the present formulations.
Due to Oasmia's excipient XR-17, a new formulation of paclitaxel has been developed. Paccal® Vet has shown high efficacy in various tumours with acceptable adverse effects. It is now possible to successfully treat malignant tumours in dogs, even types of cancers which are otherwise very resistant.
